Calgary, AB – City of Calgary W.O. Mitchell Book Prize
The City of Calgary established this prize, in honour of acclaimed Calgary writer W.O. Mitchell, to recognize literary achievement by Calgary authors. The $2,000 prize is awarded each year to the author of an outstanding book published in the previous year. Weblink

Edmonton, AB – City of Edmonton Book Prize
The City of Edmonton Book Prize was established by Edmonton City Council in 1995. Entries must deal with some aspect of the City of Edmonton: history, geography, current affairs, its art or its people or be written by an Edmonton author. The winning author receives a $2,000 cash prize sponsored by Audreys Books. Weblink

Halifax Regional Municipality, NS – Mayor's Award for Cultural Achievement in Literature

Halifax Regional Municipality, NS – Mayor's Award for Excellence in Book Illustration
Founded in 2003, the $1,500 prize recognizes excellence in book illustration by a resident illustrator, artist, or photographer of the Halifax Regional Municipality. 2004 Nomination Criteria & Form (PDF, 505K)

Halifax Regional Municipality, NS – Dartmouth Book Awards
Established in 1989, the awards are presented each year to Canadian literature featuring Nova Scotia  and its people in both fiction and non-fiction categories. Two prizes of $1,500 each are awarded - one for fiction and one for non-fiction. A third prize for first book was established in 2000. Weblink

Montréal, QC – Grand Prix du livre de Montréal
Founded in 1987 by the City of Montreal, the $15,000 prize is awarded annually to an author of an outstanding book in English or French. Weblink

Ottawa, ON – Ottawa Book Awards | Prix du livre d'Ottawa
The awards recognize published books of literary excellence, written by local authors residing in Ottawa. In 2004, the Ottawa Book Awards were expanded to include submissions of both fiction and non-fiction in both official languages each year. A prize of $2,500 will be awarded in each of the following four categories: English fiction, English non-fiction, French fiction and French non-fiction. Weblink

Sherbrooke, QC – Grand Prix du livre de la Ville de Sherbrooke
Founded in 1989, the winning author receives $4,000 and each shortlisted author receives $1,000. Weblink

Toronto, ON – City of Toronto Book Award
The Toronto Book Awards were first presented by Toronto City Council in 1974 to honour authors of books of literary and artistic merit that are evocative of Toronto. These annual awards offer $15,000 in prize money. Each shortlisted author (usually four to six) receives $1,000 and the winning author is awarded the remainder. Weblink

Vancouver, BC – City of Vancouver Book Award
A $2,000 prize, presented annually since 1989 to authors of books in any genre that demonstrates excellence and contributes to the appreciation and understanding of Vancouver’s history, unique character or the achievements of its residents. Weblink

Victoria, BC – City of Victoria Butler Book Prize
Established in 2003 to honour Victoria's vibrant literary community, the $5,000 City of Victoria Butler Book Prize is to be awarded annually to an author in the Capital Region. The prize is a public/private partnership funded by the City of Victoria and Brian H. Butler of Butler Brothers Supplies Ltd. Weblink

Winnipeg, MB – The Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award
Established in 1999, the $5,000 award is a juried annual prize honouring books which evoke the special character, and contribute to the appreciation and understanding of Winnipeg. Weblink

Poet Laureates

Edmonton, AB – City of Edmonton Poet Laureate
Edmonton's first poet laureate was named in June 2005 as the City's "ambassador for the literary arts." Website provides terms of appointment, information about the role of the poet laureate, works, programme details and biographical information. Weblink

Halifax Regional Municipality, NS – Halifax Regional Municipality Poet Laureate
HRM appoints a Poet Laureate to serve a term of four years, the same as that of Council. The Poet Laureate is charged with serve as an advocate for literacy and the literary arts. The intention of appointing a Poet Laureate is to reflect the life of the community through readings of poetry at certain civic events and other activities.
