Municipal Cultural Mapping

The Cultural Mapping Toolkit has been designed to take you through the entire mapping process, from creating an inventory to drawing up and presenting your map. The process has been broken down into stages and steps. Each step is accompanied by examples, checklists or worksheets to help you get organized. When you have finished, the working documents will serve as a record of the suggestions and solutions you came up with as you went along. The Mapping Toolkit is also available as a PDF in French, in the Publications section of the CCNC website.

Lalonde, M. et als. (2006). Chicago: University of Chicago, Cultural Policy Center. First study of its kind in a major US metropolitan centre finds that while race and ethnicity do play a role in lower participation rates among African-Americans and Latinos, socio-economic factors are the strongest predictors of participation.

With its final report released in May 12, 2002, this McKnight Foundation project tried to gauge the extent of suburban arts development, and to raise its profile with artists, arts administrators, arts patrons, funders, and public officials. Project reports and community profiles available online. Key questions included: How are the arts developing in the suburbs?; Why is suburban arts development happening now?; and Why does this trend matter?

National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership (NNIP). United States: Urban Institute. An exploratory and experimental effort to develop arts and culture neighbourhood indicators for use in local planning, policymaking, and community building in the United States.

Australia Council and Arts Victoria, 2005. Detailed guide to conducting audience research, including advice on “how to plan an audience research campaign from inception through to analysis and implementation”. Different research techniques are covered, including informal observation, focus groups and questionnaires.

Ontario Museum Association. October 2003. 87 pp. Conference papers, proceedings and related documents reporting on the Ontario Museum Association Collaborative Performance Measures Project prepared by the four participating organizations. These include a history of the project, outline of its mission and objectives, reflections on the implementation of a system of performance measures and templates for performance measurement. Ottawa: City of Ottawa, 196 pp. The City of Ottawa's Department of Transportation, Utilities, and Public Works has developed "a standardized Competitive Service Delivery Review (CSDR) Framework and Process to assess all services for potential improvements and determine the best way to deliver those services."

Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (August 2004). Toronto: Ontario Ministry of Muncipal Affairs and Housing. A practical guide published by the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing to assist senior managers of municipal departments work through step-by-step the review and improvement of service delivery and expenditure management.

Performance measures for the social impacts of the arts from the University of Pennsylvania.

Rodning Bash, Sharon (2006). St. Paul, MN: Metropolitan Regional Arts Council. This report shares the findings of a year-long study funded by the Bush Foundation that sought to discover whether there were critical ingredients or common themes necessary to build long-term viability for the arts in rural and exurban communities.

This Guide is intended for use as a practical handbook to help City staff design and implement a public involvement process or solve problems with one that is underway. It does not prescribe set public involvement methods; rather, it outlines best practices and flexible tools.

Submitted to the Village of Pemberton by Commonwealth Historic Resource Management Limited. 2010. The present Cultural Scan and Map addresses arts, heritage and mountain recreation. The scan focuses on organizations facilities and events open and accessible to the general public. In addition to Art and Heritage, this study is taking the unique approach to include mountain-related outdoor recreation as a cultural component of Pemberton and the surrounding district.
